“Learn from the mistakes of others, because you won’t live long enough to make them all yourself!”

Azaria Francis

Diversity and Inclusion Consultant

Azaria is an Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Consultant, and works with deaf and interpreting organisations.  She has facilitated training and presented at conferences for interpreters in the UK, Europe and internationally, on all topics related to EDI.

Azaria has worked with the deaf community for 17 years and has been a Registered Sign Language Interpreter (RSLI) for 11 years.  Her training started with the deaf and interpreting profession by looking specifically at ‘Race and Interpreting’ and then branched out into other EDI related topics.  She has since facilitated training and workshops for many interpreters and deaf people worldwide.

Azaria has also presented on these topics at various conferences and events, notably at the European Forum for Sign Language Interpreters (EFSLI) and the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI), where she looked specifically at the lack of EDI training for interpreters (in various countries) pre and post qualification.

She is proud that she can facilitate and present in English or British Sign Language (BSL) so Deaf people can have direct access to the important topic of EDI.

Azaria is also a former Director of the Interpreters of Colour Network (IOCN) and believes in promoting their mission of ‘support, educate and celebrate’, to address the under-representation of people of colour and other marginalised groups within the interpreting and translation profession.

I love the light bulb moments when people truly understand a concept or can relate it to their life / situation.  When they have that self-reflective moment I feel part of their developmental journey and am always happy to meet people where they are.

My determination, tell me I can’t then watch me work twice as hard to prove you wrong!
